Spoilers for Star Wars, in general.
Master Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
What seemed like nearly a lifetime ago when Disney first acquired Lucasfilm was the shocking news that an origin film, based on the life of everybody’s favorite little green sage of unknown heritage, was indeed in the works.
However, this enthusiastic announcement by the new heads at Lucasfilm was met with quite the polarizing response from fans, with some agreeing that a Yoda origin movie was well-overdue, while others expressed their concerns about the project.
Fast forward to the present day, and it is rumored that the idea for the Jedi Master’s origin film still remains on the table.
This then begs the question: should Yoda have his own film?
On the one hand, it would be a no-brainer for the studio to attempt to fulfill such a project as Yoda himself is one of the most beloved characters from the original Star Wars line-up. If the film is handled well, it will come as no surprise to see droves of fans clamoring into cinemas to witness the rise of everyone’s favorite object-subject-verb pattern speaker into arguably the most powerful Force user in the galaxy.
On the other hand, while there is no doubt that an origin film could be an entertaining and eye-opening experience for viewers, it could potentially pose the danger of diminishing Yoda’s character entirely.
One of the key elements that give Yoda his allure is the mystery surrounding his existence. This mystique around the character has made him seem more other-worldly in comparison to many other figures in the wider Star Wars mythos. It allows audiences to fantasize about his origins and debate their ideas among one another in the Star Wars community.
By introducing an origin film of the character, there will only ever be a single, fixed canonical entry of who Yoda was.
And that, might unravel the magic which made the character so adored in the first place.
