Spoilers for DC Films, in general.
From left: Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker
Like a tale as old as time itself, a showdown between the two most notable DC Comics characters is always just a matter of time. And this is not to say that it has not happened before, for twice now we have borne witness to the Batman and the Joker duking it out on screen, such as seen in Tim Burton’s 1989 film, Batman, and Christopher Nolan’s 2008 film, The Dark Knight. Of course, this is excluding the numerous times the two have confronted one another in the comics, video games, animated shows, and most recently, in the final 10-minutes of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
That being said, it is most curious to note that there has never been any sort of fan fatigue towards seeing The Caped Crusader and The Clown Prince of Crime battling it out, which only lends credibility to the notion that we very well might see a new Batman versus Joker film in the near future. To add to this, with every new incarnation of The Dark Knight we get, the greater the chances are of seeing the superhero having to face off against his most dastardly foe once again.

As it has since been confirmed that 2022’s The Batman will not be part of the DCEU but instead exist as its own separate entity as part of “Earth-2”, one cannot help but ponder on how intriguing it might be to see Pattinson’s Batman go head-to-head with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. After all, the latter’s villainous solo outing also appears to be separate from the main DCEU canon, making the two films a sort of match-made-in-alternate-Gotham, or so to speak. Furthermore, the film very evidently exhibits an almost (if not entirely) identical aesthetic and narrative to The Batman, which could allow for a more seamless merging of the two characters into a single film.
Therefore, it seems perfectly logical to hope that we will one day see Pattinson’s Batman meet Phoenix’s Joker, for it would arguably make for some riveting content on screen. Granted, we are well aware that the settings of both films take place in drastically different timelines, but as we have seen time and time again, anything can happen where comic book movies are concerned. It is up to the writer to sort it out in the end.
