The Knights of Ren – Who are They and What to Expect?

Knights of Ren

Yes, it’s a day until the official release of Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker and it’s the film that ends the 40-year Lucasfilms saga. As fans, we cannot wait to see how it all ends, however, the Star Wars franchise is far from over. Disney recently produced a series called the Mandalorian – surely you’ve heard of the whole baby Yoda hype, and they are planning another (unnamed) series to be debuted in 2022, and meanwhile, Marvel is busy publishing comic books that further explain the story of Ren. Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren #1 was released this week.

Disney has teased us about the Knights of Ren in the trailers, but they have not revealed much. So here’s what we know about the Knights of Ren from Disney so far:

Knights of Ren

  1. They look cool.

..and that’s about it. Disney has been extremely secretive about the armoured, grim apprentices of Ren, but here’s some information we do have about the Knights of Ren, from a passage taken from Ultimate Star Wars New Edition book:

“The Knights of Ren are Kylo Ren’s most deadly and mysterious servants. With their bodies encased in rusty, battered armor and their faces permanently concealed beneath ominous masks – echoing that of the new Supreme Leader himself – even their species remains a mystery. What is obvious to anyone who witnesses them in action is that their fighting skills and martial prowess are without equal. Each Knight is armed with a lethally effective and unique weapon, suited to either long range or close-quarter combat."

Rise of Kylo Ren

So let’s break it down. We know that they are loyal servants of Kylo Ren, they are heavily armored and their identity is unknown, their fighting skills are unmatched, and they each have a unique weapon. There was no mention whether they are Siths, or whether they are force-sensitive so that was a huge question mark, until the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren #1. The comic book seemingly confirmed that the knights are indeed force-sensitive.

In an interview with comic writer Charles Soule, he revealed a little more information about the Knights of Ren, saying “they can all use the Force, the Dark side of the Force, to varying degrees. They’re not as powerful as a Jedi or a Sith, but they use it when they fight…. They have some sort of a code, like a motorcycle gang, but it’s not elaborate. They’re flexible.” The question, if they’re neither jedis nor siths, what are they? There a number of theories surrounding the origin of the Knights of Ren, and we’re hoping that some of it will be revealed in Star Wars Episode 9. We do know for sure that the entire origin story of Ren and his knights will be told in the comic book series, considering that there is about 30 years’ worth of timeline narrative missing before the beginning of the third Star Wars trilogy.
