John Cena will be reprising his role as the titular Peacemaker on the HBO Max series

We are not going to lie; this is certainly an odd choice for a television show. Shortly after his big debut as one of the members of the reinvigorated Task Force X in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, it was announced that the character would be given his own spinoff series that takes place after the events of the film. As we expected, the news of John Cena’s psychopathic character being given the spotlight of having his own show was not met with thunderous applause and screams of excitement, rather, more along the lines of raised eyebrows and crickets chirping.
With such enthusiasm (or lack thereof) of a Peacemaker series heading our way, it only begs the question: will it be a success?

After all, apart from his thoroughly entertaining appearance in The Suicide Squad, the chrome, toilet-seat-helmet wearing anti-hero has remained relatively obscure in the comic book world. Still, to play Devil’s advocate, this lack of exploration regarding the character prior to his appearance in the film could very well be the reason the spinoff show does come out a success.
This is precisely because it allows the writers to freely invent a new narrative for the Peacemaker with little to no obstacle that would otherwise be in conflict with any established storylines for the character in the comics. Furthermore, it will also serve as a means to entice viewers to check out the show once it releases in January 2022, as there currently exists no definitive way in which the Peacemaker story could be told.
For what it is worth, even if the show turns out to be a steaming pile of garbage, at least we can still say that we enjoyed the character in The Suicide Squad enough to give his show a try.
