Spoilers for the DCEU, in general.
Ben Affleck as Batman, seen here in a still from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
With the utter bedlam that now constitutes the DC Extended Universe, it would come as no surprise that many fans feel as if they have been left in limbo as to whether they will ever see a rigid, interconnected universe in the likes of what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to offer.
Aside from the recent The Suicide Squad and a couple of films slated for release in both 2022 and 2023, respectively, the studio has remained largely tight-lipped regarding what is in store for fans eager to see their favorite heroes in a more cohesively structured franchise.
That being said, it has come to our attention that there is one piece of good news (or bad, depending on which side of the fence you rest your tush on), a single piece of insider information that could potentially shed some light on where the DCEU might ostensibly be heading towards; Batfleck returns.
We are all quite well aware of Ben Affleck’s ambivalence when it comes to his reprising of the role as The Dark Knight; one could say that it reads along the lines of a long and drawn-out “will they?” “won’t they?” type scenario. To be honest, fans were not surprised at all when Affleck decided to bow out of the role after the nightmare-fueled 2017 feature Justice League, or more aptly renamed Josstice League, by fans who abhorred the film.
Fan excitement soon swelled once again when it was announced that Affleck would don the iconic cape and cowl once more for the quick reshoots in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and then a second time when it was revealed that the actor would reprise the role for the upcoming The Flash movie in 2022.
While all these are now considered old news, it has recently been reported that Batfleck might be with us for a little while longer than anticipated. This is thanks to a few well-placed sources vouched for by We Got This Covered, purportedly the same sources that confirmed the return of Batfleck in The Flash movie long before it was ever announced, who stated that Discovery does indeed intend to convince Affleck to return as The Bat once the Discovery/Warner Media merger is successfully completed in mid-2022.
Of course, we can never honestly know for sure if the Affleck version of The Dark Knight will return, but there appears to be some merit behind the report itself. Regardless, some news is better than no news, and whether or not Batfleck will ever be a thing again once his appearance in The Flash has come and gone, well, that remains to be seen.
